Dear Member,

Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards (ACCEA) 2011-12 Round

The BHS, as a Specialist Society, is able to nominate a limited number of its consultant members for Department of Health, Clinical Excellence Awards (or Distinction Awards in Scotland). We also pass our ranking on to the RCP.

The 2011/12 round of applications is still in doubt as the DDRB report is currently under consideration. However, we are extending an invitation to members to apply now for BHS support in case the decision should fall in favour of new awards for this round as it will be too late to set the process in motion if we wait any longer. It should be noted that if any new awards are granted, they may be reduced. Unfortunately, the Scottish Distinction Awards are frozen again this year; there will be no new awards or progression to higher grades.

Guidance is given on the ACCEA website (http://www.dh.gov.uk/ab/ACCEA/index.htm) to help make a decision on whether to request consideration. We understand that the guidance is strictly followed regarding the ten years as a consultant, or five years since a previous award before a new award would be considered.

Applications for a new award
It the awards go ahead, online registration and guidance notes will be available via the ACCEA website link above from 1 September. The ACCEA will only accept online applications but candidates may copy and paste their work from the Word application forms into the online system when it becomes available.

BHS Nomination
Application forms for BHS consideration can be downloaded via the BHS website - see links below. Your application should be sent by e-mail to the BHS (bhs@le.ac.uk) for consideration and will be treated in confidence. Subsequently your award application should be completed on-line and must be submitted to ACCEA by the candidate only, please do not send it to the BHS, we cannot do this for you. All self-nominations will be considered and ranked by the BHS Awards Committee and the rankings will be sent directly to the ACCEA.

In order for applications to reach the ACCEA before the anticipated deadline of 9 December 2011, and for us to influence RCP nominations, the following schedule must be strictly followed. No applications received after the deadline date will be considered.

July 2011	2010/11 Awards announced by ACCEA
29 August 2011	Deadline for BHS Members to submit their applications to the BHS by e-mail to bhs@le.ac.uk.
12 September 2011	BHS Clinical Excellence Awards Committee meets to discuss and finalise approved applications. This ranking will not be revealed to candidates.
28 October 2011	List of approved applications is sent to RCP for their consideration
9 December 2011 (anticipated)	Deadline for self-nomination and BHS submission of approved applicants to ACCEA
